Electro-erosion by sinking of mechanical parts

Die-sinking electro-erosion is one of the processes necessary for the production of various mechanical parts. This is an essential step in verifying the reliability of industrial components such as screws. As an expert in this field, SMEPI offers various services relating to spark erosion. We can actually intervene to measure the resistance and performance of your industrial parts of all kinds.

Electro screw erosion process

In the field of industrial machining, the parts used to assemble machines require extensive verification. And among the techniques most used to test them is electro-erosion by sinking . We cannot do without this machining method to check the performance of different mechanical parts. To put it simply, professionals like SMEPI use it to judge the performance and strength of screws. This process is also called "sparking" in the jargon.

It should be noted that the latter is different from wire EDM which consists of using a wire as an electrode to profile and cut the workpieces. It is thus necessary to drill mini-holes of 0.3 to 6mm in diameter on the various components to be treated, which requires the use of machines with extreme precision. A regular sequence of tiny holes then appears on the parts, which will determine whether they are resistant or not.

Machining of metal parts

The manufacture of mechanical parts in metal or alloy requires specific skills and adapted machines and this is a field reserved for experts. There are several machining methods among which the professional will choose the one that best corresponds to the destination of the elements to be manufactured. Die-sinking electro-erosion is for its part a technique mainly used for the design of molds and dies used to create molded parts in small or large quantities. The principle is identical to that of wire EDM, except that the tool for cutting is not a wire, but an electrode shaped according to the desired machining.

The design of parts is much more delicate when it comes to creating precision or safety elements for sensitive industries such as nuclear, aeronautics, petrochemicals or when it comes to creating very small parts. size like watchmaking for example. In these cases, in addition to choosing the most suitable manufacturing method, the specialist can also offer his client the most suitable metal or alloy.

Understand the specificities of EDM machining

To make parts by removing material, professionals use a group of techniques called machining. The latter makes it possible to produce very precise parts, small in size and with low tolerance. But technology evolves and different processes are emerging. This makes it possible today to find a whole host of machining methods. Material removal can be done with mechanical techniques such as hot machining, vibrated cutting machining, machining on machine tools or by physical means such as laser machining or electron beam machining.

The process that interests us the most is that which can be carried out chemically, namely electro-erosion by die-casting . This system allows material to be removed using electric shocks. It is also known as spark machining.

The advantage of this method is that it can be used to work with all kinds of metals and materials that conduct electricity, no matter how hard they are. Four elements are essential during operations namely a part, an electrode, electricity and a dielectric.

Die-sinking electro-erosion is the most used for the production of glassware molds, powder compacting dies, plastic injection molds, parts for aeronautics, mechanical parts or even punches.

A manufacturing process mastered by SMEPI

Die-sinking electro-erosion is the most efficient machining process for manufacturing mechanical parts in large, small or medium series. This is why we favor this technique within our company SMEPI. Thanks to our ten years of experience, we are able to handle the most specific and complex orders requiring the use of die-casting EDM .

After having defined your needs and created the plans of your mechanical parts, we manufacture prototypes which are subject to your validation. Then, we take care of the production and assembly of your orders. Our intervention ends after the quality control of the products.
